Preparation of Oxidized Starch Adhesive in Room Temperature

In corrugated board industry, starch adhesive is most extensively used. Starch adhesive, which hasgreat effect on the performance, production technology and manufacturing cost of the corrugated board, is oneof the key factors to obtain corrugated board with high strength and desired performance at the lowered cost.At present, starch adhesive for corrugated board industry is mainly produced through conventional two stepmethod, which led to the shortage of bad strength, slow drying speed and low fluidity. It is of great importanceto develop starch adhesive with stable properties, high performance, good viscosity, fast curing speed tomeet the market requirement. In this paper, modified starch binder was synthesized using an oxidation methodwith the aid of the catalysis of nickel sulphate under room temperature. The effects of caustic soda loadingand oxidation time on the properties of the starch adhesive were examined. The caustic soda loading and oxidationtime both have influence on the viscosity, initial tack force, bonding strength, drying rate and the solidcontent of the starch adhesive. The optimum synthesis condition was obtained. Under the optimum condition, the viscosity, initial tack force, bonding strength, drying rate and the solid content of the modified starch adhesivewere better than those of conventional two step technology. The modified starch adhesive showedgreat potential for industrial application.
