Comparison between Properties of Trunk of Nipa Palm Pulp and Industrial Kraft Pulp

The objectives of this project are 1. to study pulping process of trunk of Nipa palm trees. 2. tostudy physical mechanical and optical properties of trunk of Nipa palm pulp and kraft pulp and 3. To comparephysical mechanical and optical properties of paper produced from trunk of Nipa palm pulp and paper producedfrom kraft pulp. In this experiment, optimal condition of pulp preparation was obtainedthrough use ofSodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Sodium Sulfite (Na2S). After pulp was obtained, then refine trunk of Nipapalm pulp and kraft pulp at 3,000, 6,000 revolutions. Thereafter, all refined pulp and unrefined pulp of bothtrunk of Nipa palm pulp and kraft pulp were tested for their freeness. Handsheets of both kinds of pulp wereprepared for physical, mechanical,and optical properties measuring. Results revealed that, the physicalproperties such as freeness, roughness, water resistance and air permeability of kraft paper are higher thantrunk of Nipa palm paper. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength index, burst resistance index,of trunk of Nipa palm paper are higher than kraft paper except tearing resistance index of kraft paper is higherthan trunk of Nipa palm paper. In a way, the optical properties of both kinds of paper are not significantly different.However, trunk of Nipa palm paper has higher value of burst resistance index and tensile strength indexthan standard kraft paper. Therefore,trunk of Nipa palm paper can be used as raw material in packagingpaper or corrugated medium paper manufacturing.
