Properties of Biodegradable Blend Laminated Kraft Paper and Paperboard
Kraft paper and paperboard are used widely in packaging application but its properties are easilyaffected by water and moisture. The use of plain paper is therefore limited to dry food. Lamination with biodegradableplastic is one of the solutions to improve water resistance and still retains the eco-friendliness ofpaper. The objectives of this research are to study the effect of lamination method and the effect of storagecondition (ambient, refrigerator, and freezer) on the properties of laminated structure. Kraft paper can only becoated using adhesive lamination process but paperboard can be coated using either process. The properties(brightness, tensile strength, tearing resistance, bursting strength, and abrasion resistance) of laminated paperboardfrom both processes are very similar except heat lamination process gives higher material gloss and lesswater absorption. Kraft paper and paper board laminated biodegradable blend film by adhesive laminationprocess were selected for further testing of properties after storage because it can be used for both substratesat the refrigerated and freezer temperature. When undergo 1 month storage at low temperature the laminationcan only slightly suppressed properties changes.
