Developing activity supporting environments-challenges for schools and society
There has been a great deal of concern in Western societies about the increase in obesity and similar lifestyle related diseases. Increased affluence and technologically supported lifestyles have led to the control and e-ven the eradication of infectious diseases. Yet, despite some rapid increases in life expectancy during the last century, we have now for the first time started to see the prospect of future generations becoming less healthy and having a shorter life span than their parents. Lifestyle diseases, based around the problems of over consumption of food and under participation in physical activity, are seen as providing the explanation for this unexpected and regressive trend.
