Research on correlation between urban low- income people s physical self-esteem and life satisfaction
Introduction: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between physical self-esteem and life satisfaction among urban low-income residents in China within the framework of Maslow s Need Hierarchy Theory and Cognitive Psychological Stress Theory. Methods: 693 low-income residents from 10 districts in Tianjin were chosen for participation. Questionnaires used in this study include Physical Self-perception Profile (PSPP; Fox et al, 1989, 1990) as a measure of physical self-esteem, and General Life Satisfaction Scale (Leungh & Leungh, 1992) as a measure of life satisfaction, and Social Support Rating Scale (Xiao, 1993) as a measure of social support to assess the status of urban low-income peoples physical self-esteem, social support and life satisfaction. Demographic information of the participations was also assessed using a self-created questionnaire. Comparisons of means, variance analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were performed to investigate the effects of physical self-esteem and social support on life satisfaction of urban low-income people.
