Historical background of forage crops collection in VIR Institute of Plant Industry (VIR) was organized on the base of Bureau of Applied Botany which in its turn set up the task to introduce forage crops for the husbandry purposes in Russia. First forage crops assessions were registered in 1907; in 1913 the collection contained only 82 forage accessions collected by VIR staff in the Central and North -Western parts of Russia, mainly local clever accessions. Some material was brought by N. I. Vavilov himself from his collecting missions and foreign trips. Planned work on introduction of forage crops was started in 1922 which is considered to be the beginning of study of forage crops in VIR. According to N. I. Vavilov guidelines assessions of Trifolium, Medicago, Melilotus, Phleum and other grasses were collected at different regions of USSR. From 1922 to 1933 scientists of forage crops department conducted 184 expeditions aimed at collecting seeds of native forages. The best foreign varieties from USA, Europe and local varieties from Middle East and Central Asia were attracted, too.
