A Review of the Functions of Chicory ( Cichorium intybus L. ) and its Cultivars in China
Chicory is an efficient, high -quality crop plant with multiple uses and functions. To explore and develop the use of the chicory plant in organic agriculture, this study evaluated and reviewed recent advances in its use in China. The study focuses on chicory cultivars (varieties) and their agronomic characteristics. Multiple functional uses of chicory are discussed, particularly with regard to its use as a high -yield forage plant, high -quality leafy vegetable, beneficial herb with natural extracts, and valuable raw material for industry. In addition, this study summarizes the plants chemical composition, physiological bioactivities, curative effect as a vegetable, good digestibility, use. in confectionery products and beverages, and its potential for use in the creation of new medicines, functional foods and additives. Future studies are suggested.
