Reproductive biology of whipgrass (Hemarthria compressa) germplasm in southwest China

Whipgrass (Hemarthria compressa (L. f.) R. Br.) is a stoloniferous, perennial grass, belong to tribe of Andropogoneae, play important roles in husbandry industry and ecological reconstruction in south china, because of its special agronomic characteristics. A major disadvantage of wihpgrass is its low sexual reproductivity. To explore the reason of low fecundity, some reproductive characteristics had been studied. The results showed that pollen -ovule ratio of whipgrass was 87465/1, belong to the reproduction system of obligate xenogamy. Pollen germination rate in vitro was 65. 67% , and the life -span was no more than 3 hours under room temperature and dry condition. Most of pollen grains distributed within the circle of 5 m from the pollen grain originate place. In this area of pollen covered, the plant stands come from the same mother plant, so the cross -pollination in the same plant stand was common. There was significant difference (p<0. 01) for the plant stigma receptivity between the greenhouse (average temperature was 27℃, average relative humidity was 65%) and the field (average temperature was 25℃, average relative humidity was 75. 9%) condition. The duration of stigma receptivity was 1-5 days and 1-3 days after blooming in the greenhouse and in the field, respectively. The natural fecundity is just 1.17%. No self -pollinated seed was collected.
