Surface Roughness Measurement of Micro/Meso Parts by Offset Segment Profile Method

This paper creates a new offset segment profile (OSP) method for measuring the roughness in a small area. Seven discrete shorter profiles, which equal to the standard sampling length, are measured in a parallel manner with equal spacing. Then these shorter profiles are connected to form another surface profile for roughness analysis. The experimental results reveal that the surface roughness obtained by the OSP method is closed to the value measured by the ISO standard procedure. Therefore the OSP method is useful to determine the surface roughness of micro/meso parts with lower cost and reliable measurement results.
