Structural design and experimental analysis of a selective laser sintering system with nano-hydroxyapatite powder

Hydroxyapatite(HA) is a ceramic transposition material which is widely used for artificial bone, while it is only applied in a small implantation for non-bearing bone repair due to its high brittleness, low strength and poor mechanical properties. Nano technology has been used to improve the mechanical properties of HA for bone implantation, such as increasing torsion modulus, tensile strength and fatigue resistance. In order to prevent the nano-size particles grown from micron size in the process of the conventional sintering, a selective laser sintering system for fabrication of artificial bone with nano-HA powder was designed and manufactured. The microstructure of the sintered nano-HA under SEM with this system was investigated. It is shown that nano particles grow with the sintering time and it looks more like granule in stead of the original shape of needle. The nano-ceramic of HA can be obtained by selecting a reasonable sintering time when the other conditions remain unchanged.
