Performance Superiority of IR-UWB over DS-UWB with Finite-Resolution Matched-Filter Receivers
In this paper, we investigate performance comparison between Impulse-Radio Ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) and Direct Sequence UWB (DS-UWB) in realistic systems, where Matched-Filter (MF) receivers have finite quantization resolution. Bit-Error-Rate (BER) performance of a high-resolution MF receiver for IR-UWB and DS-UWB is analyzed and compared under typical UWB dispersive channels. Also, performance of a 1-bit MF receiver for IR-UWB and DS-UWB is analyzed and compared under Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel. The analysis results provide insight into general cases that B-bit MF receivers are used. Simulations of B-bit MF receivers are performed under both AWGN channel and typical UWB dispersive channel. The results show IR-UWB outperforms DSUWB with finite-resolution MF receivers, and the performance superiority is more significant as quantization resolution is lower.
