Similarity Criteria of Homogeneous Embankment Failure due to Overtopping Flow

The Process of dam breach is a strongly nonlinear process and very complex. The research of similarity criteria of dam breach has no breakthrough as yet. According to five highest prototype tests of the world and twenty laboratory tests conducted by Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute, the mechanism of homogeneous embankment failure due to overtopping flow is headcut. Based on this mechanism and results of tests, head-cut migration rate similarity scare λR and the time similarity scare of flow process A, of homogeneous embankment failure due to overtopping flow were derived. According to the similarity criteria several tests were conducted for two field tests. The results verified the similarity criteria are available and it could be used to s simulate the breach process for homogeneous embankment failure due to overtopping flow.
