Experimental Investigation of Beach Nourishment

This paper presents a three-dimensional laboratory experiment on beach nourishment project in Beidaihe, China. The experiment is mainly designed to investigate the effects of alongshore sandbars and submerged breakwaters on the protection of nourished beach. The original erosive beach berm is firstly extended 50 meters after beach fill (Case A), then an alongshore sandbar (Case B), three submerged breakwaters (Case D) are considered to strengthen the protection to the nourished beach. After the reliability of the experiment is verified by comparing the experimental results to the available field data sets, the above three cases are conducted under specific wave conditions. In the experiments, wave elevation is recorded by the resistance type wave gages and seabed elevation is measured using URⅠ-Ⅲ bathymetry measurement system. Based on amounts of experimental data, the effects of each element in the above face protection discipline (beach fill+alongshore sandbar+submerged breakwaters with different planform arrangement) on the evolution of beach profile and shoreline are discussed in detail and Case D is recommended for practical use due to its better performance.
