Design of Spillway Bucket for Kuhrang III Dam by Using a Physical Model

Hydraulic structures are used to control the flow of water in dam developments. Since flow pattern in hydraulic structures is very complex, optimum design is usually found by hydraulic model studies. Kuhrang HI Dam is constructed on the Birgan River in the province of Charmahal-OBakhtiari, Iran, to support and regulate downstream water demand. The dam is a double arch concrete type, 88 meters high from the river bed. In the present work the 1 ! 30 physical model of Kuhrang IE Dam was used to design the spillway bucket and improve its hydraulic performance. Performance of the bucket was examined with more than seven possible flood discharges including critical conditions of very low and very high flows. Primary experiments were focused on the jet trajectory of the bucket and its aeration. In order to prevent the contact between dam body and released water from the bucket in lower flood discharges, two alternatives were examined for the bucket lip. It was concluded that by installing a continuous wedge shape wall below the bucket, low flow jets will be well separated from the bucket lip. Moreover, scour hole at the jet impact was studied and the effect of bucket splitters on reduction of scour depth was investigated.
