Experimental Investigation of the 2D Flow over Backward Facing Step by PIV
In range of 150<Re<6500, the particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure and visualize the 2D flow over backward facing step. When the flow in this structure were laminar, transitionary and turbulent, the transient velocity distributions were obtained. It showed that the vortices of the representational transient flow field were different when they were in various states of flow. Basing on time-averaged velocity distributions in the backward facing step, which were calculated from the transient velocity, we got relation curve between the length of recirculating flow region and Re, and we discovered that the vortex structure of the transient flow field were also different from that of the time-averaged flow field. In this paper, it was indicated that the flow over the backward facing step possessed simultaneously the characteristic of unsteady flow and steady flow.
