Integration of Local Sediment Transport Rating Curves to Derive Mass Budgets-The Urumqi River
We surveyed flow dynamics and sediment transport in a mountain stream of North East Tianshan, the Urumqi River, during three flow seasons (2004 -2006). Bed load and suspended load was measured using hand held samplers. Flow velocity was measured using OTT current meters. This survey enables us to derive a simple local rating curve for bedload transport in the river that is both robust and site independent. Using this rating curve we calculate the solid sediment budget at the hero bridge station just before the river lives the mountain ranges and enters the semi-desert piedmont. This budget proves useful first to calculate sediment yield at the catchment scale and second to compare between the measured and the calculated of bed loads in a stream that is similar to other streams in the region.
