Evolution of a Typical Meandering and Bifurcated Channel in the Middle Yangtze River
With the impoundment of the Three Gorges project (TGP). water and sediment conditions, as well as the evolution process, in the downstream of the dam has been changed. In this paper, the Yaojian reach in the middle Yangtze River was chosen as a typical example of meandering and bifurcated channels. A 2D flowsediment mathematical model of the Yaojian reach was developed. The measured data in different periods, including seasons of the low water levels, the middle water levels and the flood levels from 2003 to 2007 (after the impoundment of TGP), were used to verify this model. The bed erosion and deposition in the following 20 years after the impoundment of TGP was calculated and analyzed according to the historical data. The results showed that, the Yaojian reach will be scoured, and the main stream still keeps in the right branch. Although the main tendency is erosion, the low water level in bends will still decrease by 0. 1 to 1. 2m. Therefore, the navigation depth in the inlet of the right branch will also decrease. A series of projects such as groins and fishbone dams are going to be built to improve the navigation conditions. The 2D model was used to study the effect of these proposed projects.
