Electrospun silk fibroin nanofiber tubes for peripheral nerve regeneration
Silk fibroin (SF) has been extensively studied forapplication in wound dressing, bone, vessel and nerveregeneration. We have previously reported on good in vitrobiocompatibility of SF nanofibers with neuronal cell. In thepresent study, we prepared SF nanofiber-based artificial nerveconduit to bridge 10mm long sciatic nerve defect of rats. Weevaluated the peripheral nerve regeneration outcome by acombination of electrophysiological assessment, the percentage ofwet weight loss of tibialis anterior muscle and histologicalinvestigation. These results showed that SF nanofibrous conduitcould promote peripheral nerve regeneration and would be apromising alternative to nerve autografts, especially TSFnanofibrous conduit.
