Burst Suppression EEG during Hypothermia and Raapid Rewarming in Isoflurane-anesthetized Rats

Induced hypothermia is known as an efficient neuro-protectant,while rapid posthypothermic rewarming has harmfuleffects on neural system and worsens cerebral injury. This studyinvestigated burst suppression (BS) pattern in EEG duringmoderate hypothermia and rapid rewarming in 9 isoflurane-anesthetizedrats. Temperature-induced changes were observedin BS features throughout the experiment: maximum BS ratioand burst amplitude, and minimum suppression amplitudeappeared at the lowest temperature; BS pattern reappeared afterrapid posthypothermic rewarming. In addition, it was observedthat respiratory rate changed markedly between normothermiaand moderate hypothermia while no significant fluctuation wasobserved in heart rate during the whole experiment. All thesefindings may have relevance to establish suitable protocol fortherapeutic hypothermia in clinic.
