Comparing three methods for the synthesis of pureβ -dicalcium silicate
β -dicalcium silicate is the most reactive and thusthe most important constituent of Portland cements andhas a significant influence on setting properties andstrength-development. Recently researchers haveinvestigated it as a potential candidate for hard tissuerepair. It is not, however, stable at room temperature, sosynthesis of pure powders is challenging. In this study, three methods have been investigated to prepare theβ -dicalcium silicate: solid state reaction, the sol-gelmethod and the Pechini technique. The Pechini techniquegave the purest β -dicalcium silicate with the formation oflittle or no lime, followed by the sol-gel method and thensolid state reaction.
