Skull Mechanics Study of PI Procedure Plan for Craniosynostosis Correction Based on Finite Element Method

Objective: The main purpose of correctioncraniosynostosis is to reopen cranial sutures with some boneslots in order to free the skull transformation with the braindevelopment from the closed craniums. The intent of this paper isto analysis the relationship between the shapes of bone slots and the skull rigidity. Finite element method is utilized to obtain thestress distribution and deformation clouds of the differentsurgery schemes. And then a best cranial suture bone slots shapeis brought up according to the stress distribution simulationresults. Methods: A Congenital craniosynostosis case is selectedto design the surgery treatment plan. PI-shape craniosynostosiscorrection scheme is used, and bone slots used for reconstructionthe cranial suture are in variance to simulate the stressdistribution change after the slots shape change. The cranialbone and endocranium models are meshed as tetrahedronelement for finite element analysis. For the instantaneous stresstake into account when the slots shape change, the viscoelasticmaterial properties of the crianial bone and endocranium areignored here. Abaqus is used to calculate the stress result. Results: Different bone slot shapes induce different craniumstress distribution and skull rigidity. Appropriate bone slots as the new cranial suture can make the cranium to win themaximum stress value about 46.12Mpa and the maximumdisplacement about 10.25mm. Conclusion: The results of stressdistribution and deformation of cranial bone under theintracranial pressure after the correction craniosynostosisoperation can be obtained by the finite element method. Theseresults reflect the ability of the cranial bone expanding with thebrain tissues growth. With finite element method, surgicalprediction can be made to guide surgeons to make the decision ofimproving surgical treatment.
