Metal Artifacts Reduction in Computed Tomography:A Bilateral Reprojection Approach

Reducing artifacts owing to metallic objects inComputed Tomography (CT) is a challenging task. These metalinduced anisotropic streaks are both signal dependent anddifficult to distinguish from sharp edges. The method we proposeis based on a non-iterative reprojection-reconstructionframework. It first identifies metal regions and bilateral filteringis used to deal with the streak artifacts. Refined projection data isobtained by replacing metal traces with projections of thebilateral filtered image. Metal regions were superimposed backfor the final reconstruction. Experimental results demonstrate asignificant reduction in the metal artifacts while preserving theedges for the underlying object.
