A Preliminary Observation of Intra-operative Ultrasound Backscatter Microscopy of Spinal cord injury
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating clinicalcondition. In order to bridge the spinal cord defects, the preciselocalization and identification of lesions during spinal surgery isnecessary. The present experimental investigation was to explorewhether the spinal cord lesions could be visualized more exactusing ultrasound backscatter microscopy and to correlate thefindings with those of light microscopy. The results showed thathigh frequency ultrasound microscopy imaging can identifynormal and morphologic changes occurring after experimentalspinal cord cut off injury in adult rats. These conclusionshigh-frequency intra-operative ultrasound backscatter microscopyhas obvious clinical value for the guidance of spinal surgery, andfor further clinical experiment employing ultrasound microscopyimaging to carry out nerve regeneration strategies and cell-basedtransplantation strategies in the injured spinal cord.
