Antitumor effect and mechanism of Acetylshikonin on murine sarcoma 180 cells
Chemoprevention including the use of naturalproducts is always used as one of the main treatments foradvanced cancer, and has been under intense investigation. Inthe present study, we investigated the inhibitory effect andmechanism of acetylshikonin on murine sarcoma 180 cells. The results showed acetylshikonin could inhibit theproliferation of sarcoma 180 cells and had obvious dose-effectrelationship. The characteristics of cell apoptosis such asnuclear pyknosis and chromatin condensation were observedin treated sarcoma 180 cells. Significant antitumor effects ofacetylshikonin treatments in mice bearing sarcoma 180 solidtumor were observed. Furthermore, the Bcl-2 expression wasdecreased, whereas the expression level of Bax and Caspase 3expression up-regulated in treated groups. Our data suggestthat acetylshikonin is an attractive candidate for cancertherapy although further studies are clearly needed to provethe possibility.
