ULTRAHIGH TENSIBILITY AND STIMULUS-RESPONSE OF NANOCOMPOSITE HYDROGELS

Polymer hydrogels have been intensively studied for their unique properties and potential applications. Recently, Haraguchi et al. reported a novel polymerclay nanocomposite hydrogel (NC gel), which was insitu polymerized with iV-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) in aqueous suspension of hectorite clay Laponite. The NC gel exhibited excellent mechanical properties and high transparency. The Laponite platelets worked as multifunctional cross-links in the NC gel with the polymer chains attached to the platelet surface. Laponite, carrying negative charges on the surface and positive charges at the rim, can form a clear and colorless colloidal suspension in water, which is stabilized by the repulsive electrostatic interaction. The aggregation and gelation occur when the Laponite concentration or ionic strength becomes high. Consequently, it is difficult to fabricate responsive NC gels with ionic monomers (e.g., acrylic acid, AA).
