POLYMERS WITH SPATIALLY GRADED CONTINUOUS MORPHOLOGY GENERATED BY PHASE SEPARATION UNDER SPATIALLY NON-UNIFORM CONDITIONS

In Nature and materials processing at large scales, most of the kinetic processes often proceed nonuniformly. As a consequence, hierarchical structures and morphology with multiple length scales often emerge as a footprint of these dynamic inhomogeneities. From the viewpoint of polymer materials, it would be useful if one can take advantages of this inhomogeneity to control, at will, the distribution of elastic modulus and/or the interfacial properties such as wettability of the materials. In this study, we will show that such functional polymer materials can be designed nd well controlled by taking advantages of light-induced phase separation under non-uniform conditions.
