PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYSTYRENE/IMOGOLITE NANOCOMPOSITES
Polymer materials are widely used due to their unique properties. However, polymers have lower modulus and strength, as well as usage temperatures compared with those of metals and ceramics. Recent studies on improving the mechanical properties of polymers have been focusing on reinforcing polymer matrices with nanofillers. Numerous nanoparticles and nanofibers have been employed as the nanofiliers, such as carbon nanotubes, halloysite, montmorillonite, etc. We focused on another important nanofiller called imogolite, which is naturally available, with a one-dimensional tubular structure and the smallest diameter among the known natural inorganic nanomaterials. Imogolite is an transparent aluminosilicate nanotube, with an inner diameter of ca. 1 nm, outer diameter of ca. 2 nm, and length more than 1000 ran.1 Transparent poly(methyl methacrylate)/imogolite nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties have been reported.2 In this work, polystyrene/imogolite nanocomposites were prepared and their thermal and mechanical properties were studied.
