INTERFACE MOLECULAR ENGINEERING OF POLYSTYRENE/SWNT COMPOSITES

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), owing to their ultra-high aspect ratio, excellent mechanical strength, and high thermal and electrical conductivities, are considered as ideal starting materials for fabrication of polymer/CNT composites with high performance and multifunctions.1 Regardless of the intriguing properties that CNTs exhibit, there are practical challenges in the way of dispersing CNTs into polymer matrix where the individual nanotubes and/or smaller bundles are usually required with no or less damage on the mechanical and electrical properties. To address this issue, there is growing research interest in understanding the interface between CNT and surrounding polymer matrix.2 Surface modification of CNT, which permits directly tailoring of the chemical and physical properties of the nanotubes according to their specific applications, is envisaged as an ideal cut-in point.
