UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF THE FORMATION MECHANISM OF FLOW INDUCED SHISH IN MOLECULAR SCALE

Flow induced crystallization of polymers is an important issue for academia and polymer industrial community as it is not only a special fundamental non-equilibrium thermodynamic problem but also of importance for polymer processing. Although the benefit from flow field is widely recognized, no satisfactory molecular theory has been constructed yet Especially the nucleation stage is still lack of a clear molecular image. Considering existing evidence for molecular mechanism, the nucleation stage is somehow rather vague for the three essential questions still remain as open debates: (1) What is pre-ordering? (2) Is coil stretch transition a necessary condition for shish formation? (3) What is the role of long and short chains in the formation of shish?
