HOFMEISTER EFFECT ON DIFFUSION OF SINGLE POLYELECTROLYTE AT THE SOLID-LIQUID INTERFACE

It has long been known that the nature of the different salts specifically affects the chemical and biological processes in aqueous solutions. Such effects follow in general the so-called Hofmeister series, especially for anions. The ordering of the relative effectiveness of different anions for protein precipitation from aqueous solutions followed the trend of SO_4 ~(2-)> OH-> F>Cl-> Br-> NO_3-> I-> SCN-> ClO_4The positions of some anions in the series vary depending on the method used to determine their properties. Despite the fact that the Hofmeister effect has been studied by numerous different measurements, the molecular-level mechanisms remains unraveled and is probably closely related to the hydrophobic interaction.
