LATERAL DIFFUSION OF IONIC PROBES WITHIN POLYELECTROLYTES BRUSHES

In the past decade, considerable attention has been paid on the properties and applications of smart surfaces with stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte brushes (PEB) which can change the physical and chemical properties with the external stimulus, such as pH, temperature, salt concentration, etc.13 One of the potential application of these smart polymer layer is bio-sensor as well as biocompatible substrate for biochemical and biophysical reaction or processes. Related to these applications, it is important to understand the interaction of external substances such as proteins and other possible adsorbents with the PEB. Especially, the diffusion of smaller charged molecules through the PEB is central to the functionality of many controlled release and electrochemical applications. Many simulation works have been done to study charged particles, ions diffusion in charged system such as brushes, hydrogels, dendrimer solution. Several groups measured the diffusion of electro-active probes in polyelectrolyte multilayers or brushes by means of electrochemical methods.45 Other characterizations are fluorescence related methods which are sensitive and can give us information in single molecules level.68 Unfortunately, these experiments concerning diffusion of counterion in polyelectrolyte brushes are scarce and lack systematic studies compared with simulation works.
