MODELING AND SIMULATION OF THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOR OF POLYELECTROLYTE HYDROGELS IN MACRO-SCALE
Polyelectrolyte hydrogels are networked structures of ionic macromolecular chains crosslinked to each other and surrounded by an aqueous electrolyte solution. Polyelectrolyte hydrogels can undergo reversible deformation like swelling or deswelling in response to external stimuli, such as temperature, solvent, ionic strength, pH and electric field. The stimulus-responsive properties of polyelectrolyte hydrogels make them candidates for a broad range of applications from drug delivery, biosensors and tissue engineering to microvalves and microfiuidic controllers.
