LARGE-SCALE AND HIGH ORIENTATIONAL LAMELLAR PHASE IN SUSPENSIONS OF PS-5-PLLA SINGLE CRYSTALS

Anisotropic colloidal particles are thought to be the most useful building blocks for constructing ordered structures. Anisotropy, from the point of pure physics, is the origin of liquid crystalline order according to Onsagers theory. The theory pointed that the gain of translational entropy compensates the loss of orientational entropy, i.e. entropy-driven order. Concerning the disclike particles, most of which are mineral platelets, previous researchers have found the columnar phase and nematic phase. Glotzer et al. pointed out through simulation, that tethered nanowheels can form lamellar phase when the solvent is good for the tethered molecules. Little work has been done on this phase. In this work, a large-scale and high orintational lamellar phase was obtained through the phase separated process of suspensions of PS-b-PLLA single crystals.
