MECHANISM OF RAFT POLYMERIZATION-A MODEL STUDY

Controlled/living radical polymerization mediated by thiocarbonylthio species achieves living features through the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process (Eqn 1).1 The mechanism of the RAFT polymerization cause much attention due to the inconsistence between theoretical and experimental results, specifically the retardation kinetics. In order to explain the reason for radical loss, two different mechanisms were postulated, e.g., slow fragmentation of the intermediate radical2 and cross termination between propagating radical and the intermediate radical3. However, the rate coefficient of fragmentation, Kfrg, is estimated to be 7× 104 and 10-2 s-1, respectively, which are of extremely large difference.
