FABRICATION OF MICROGELS VIA SUPRAMOLECULAR ASSEMBLY OF CYCLODEXTRIN-CONTAINING STAR POLYCATIONS AND OPPOSITELY CHARGED LINEAR POLYANIONS
Polyelectrolyte microgels cany positive or negative charges in a broad range of physicochemical conditions.3 In such microgels, there is an additional osmotic contribution to the swelling due to the higher concentration of mobile ions within the network as a consequence of the Donnan equilibrium. These microgels exhibit rich phenomenology in their stimuli responsive properties, due to the complex interactions between the oppositely charged functional groups. Although the osmotic deswelling of charged microgels has been studied for application in surfactants,4 drugs5,6 and protein/peptides,7 much is still relatively poor understanding of the interactions between polycation and polyanion. In this respect, weakly cross-linked microgels are investigated significantly less than highly crosslinked systems.
