Plasma treatment on selected properties of viscose rayon
Viscose rayon fibres were treated with low temperature plasma (LTP) with oxygen gas. Ripple-like patterns oriented at a direction perpendicular to the fibre axis were observed. These structures developed gradually with the increment of LTP treatment time. The dimension of this ripple-like structure was above 0.1 μm. Granular substances were developed on the LTP treated viscose rayon fibre. This granular substances were believed to be the “self-deposits from the viscose rayon fibre which developed during LTP etching and adhered back to the polymer inside the LTP chamber in vacuum condition. Properties such as the tenacity and elongation-at-break were reduced while the moisture regain was increased after LTP treatment. In addition, the crystallinity was reduced also. It might conclude that the mechanical properties and the moisture regain were changed by changing the crystallinity. Moreover, the colour of the LTP treated fibre surface changed to yellow which might be subsequently due to the oxidation effect induced by oxygen LTP.
