The interplay between structure formation and segmental dynamics constraining in semicrystalline polymers
The effect of conformational restrictions in the relaxation dynamics of confined amorphous domains of a semicrystalline polymer is analyzed by means of a statistical mechanical model. It is shown that confinement affects both the readjustment free energy barrier height and the frequency broadening of segmental relaxation, which are intrinsically connected. Analysis of dielectric relaxation data shows that the relaxation dynamics carries information about the thermodynamic state of the embedding crystals. The number of monomers participating in a cooperatively rearranging region can be estimated.
