Effect of water and pressure-induced flow deformation process on microstrcture and thermal properties of polylactide/starch blends

In this paper, Polylactide(PLA)/Starch blends were obtained by extrusion and pressure induced flow (PIF) deformation process, a constant compression at low temperature with side constraint. Water was utilized before PIF to make the starch shape change more easily. SEM was used to characterize the microstructure of PLA/starch blends and the results showed that lamellar microstructure was constructed in all blends specimens; the shape of starch was changed to round when pressure was imposed and ellipsoidal shape was observed with water utilization. The DSC analysis showed that the blends processed with pressure had different crystallization peak temperature compared to original specimen, and water plays an irreversible effect on blends.
