Dissolution and degradation behaviours of cellulose with 1-N-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride as solvent

In this paper, the preparation of the solutions was arranged starting from slurry of cellulose in the ionic liquid of 1-N-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl) by a special vertical kneader system at vacuum and high shearing rates. Torque moment and revolutions per minute (rpm) of vertical kneading were determined on-line. The cellulose solutions in ionic liquids were also characterised by means of polarizing microscope and cone-plate rheometer. The relationship of dissolution degree and torque moment was established. Several factors which affect the velocity of dissolution process including cellulose concentration and temperature of the solutions were discussed respectively. The dissolution rate was increased remarkably and the uniform solution could be obtained compared to the static dissolution method. The Cuen-degrees of polymerization (DPCuen) of the precipitated celluloses were determined. The influence of dissolution condition on cellulose degradation was studied according to the variation of DPs. It was found that the degradation occurred simultaneously in the dissolution process, however, the degradation degree could be controlled by the dissolution dynamic conditions.
