Effects of air gaps under clothing on heat transfer from human body

Air gap trapped between the inner surface of garment and the human body skin has been a major factor determining the human body heat transfer. Due to the complex geometry of the human body, the size and the distribution of air gaps were not evenly distributed. Five experimental garments made of cotton with gradually increasing at breast, waist and hip girths were tested. A 3D body scanning system was applied to measure the air gaps that exist between the different-sized garments and female body. By superimposing the 3D scanning pictures before and after dressing, the air gap thicknesses were determined with the Rapidform software. Furthermore, an infrared thermal camera was used to quantify garment surface temperature to investigate the relationship of air gap thickness and garment temperature distribution. The combination of two Non-contact measure technologies was a novel way to investigate the effect of air gaps on clothed human body heat transfer.
