Phase diagram for polyacrylonitrile /ionic liquid/H2O ternary system based on a linearized cloudpoint curve correlation
Ionic liquids (ILs), with the notable characteristics of low melting point, non-measurable vapor pressure, thermal stability and solvating properties for diverse kinds of materials, have been applied as the green solvents for the dissolution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN). And H2O is the common coagulant during the processing of PAN fiber. In order to understand the formation mechanism of PAN solution, the construction of the phase diagram for PAN/IL/H2O was carried out in this paper, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl) was selected as solvent and H2O as coagulant. The phase diagram of PAN/BMIMCl/H2O ternary system was constructed based on the linearized cloudpoint curve correlation (LCP) for the first time. The effects of polymer molecular weight and coagulation bath temperature on phase equilibrium were discussed. It is shown that BMIMCl, as a solvent, had most potential to cause phase separation when compared with Dimethylformamide (DMF) and Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO). And H2O as nonsolvent, had the strongest capacity to precipitate while methanol is weaker and ethanol is the weakest. For PAN/BMIMCl/H2O system, higher molecular weight of PAN and lower coagulation temperature will be easier to cause phase separation.
