The preparation and characterization of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) nanoparticles
Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is synthesized by microbial fermentation of aliphatic thermoplastic polyester. It has good biodegradability and biocompatibility. PHBV microspheres have lots of potential applications and value in the nano-bio-medicine and cosmetics. In this paper, the PHBV/Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) blended system was spun into fibers. It is shown that the mechanical properties of the blended fibers were improved significantly with increasing the weight ratio of CAB, and PHBV in the blended system can decrease the spinning temperature. Continuous and uniform nano-powders were prepared via direct melt extrusion of immiscible blends of thermoplastic PHBV with CAB and subsequent extraction removal of CAB. Ratios of PHBV/CAB, melt viscosity, and interfacial tensions affect the formation of nano-powders. CAB content in the blends and low interfacial tensions between PHBV and CAB are two key factors. The processing was observed by OM and SEM. This fabrication process possesses features of high productivity and environment friendliness in manufacturing biodegradable PHBV nano-powders.
