Study on copolymerization of acrylonitrile and itaconic acid in dimethylsulfoxide to high conversion

In this article, copolymers P(AN-co-IA) of acrylonitrile and itaconic acid for carbon fiber precursor, which is composed of 99 mol% of acrylonitrile, were produced through free-radical copolymerization in dimethylsulfoxide with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator at 60 ℃. We investigated the relationships between the comonomer conversions, viscosity-average molecular weights of P(AN-co-IA), viscosities of the reaction solution and reaction time at two levels of monomers in feed, 20wt% and 25wt% respectively. All reactions have been taken to high conversions of monomer (over 93%) within 24h. It was found that the higher the amount of monomer in feed was, the higher the viscosity of reaction solution was.
