Preparation of MAH grafted POE and its application in the modification of EVA

To improve the compatibility of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and flame retardant of Al(OH)3, a kind of Maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted ethylene-1-octene copolymer (POE) was prepared by reactive extrusion in twin-screw extruder and filled into EVA as a bridge between EVA and Al(OH)3. The effects of MAH, dicumyl peroxide (DCP), electron donor agent (EDA) and styrene on the grafting ratio and melting index of MAH-g-POE were studied. The results showed that the melt index (MI) of MAH-g-POE decreased while grafting degree increased with increasing DCP contents. The halogen-free fire retardant (HFFR) material of EVA/POE-g-MAH/Al(OH)3(35/15/50) was also prepared by a torque rheometer. The effects of DCP and MAH contents on the compatibility and mechanical properties of EVA/POE-g-MAH/Al(OH)3 were investigated, respectively. It can be concluded that POE-g-MAH was an effective compatibility agent for EVA/Al(OH)3 to improve the tensile strength and elongation at break. The optimum effect can be obtained when POE-g-MAH was prepared using 2phr MAH and 0.15phr DCP.
