Study on the tensile strength of flexible composites based on Weibull model

The tensile strength of flexible composites exhibits large scatter mainly as a result of the complexity and interaction of failure modes, and manufacturing induced defects. A practical approach in design for strength of flexible composites which uses as characteristic values for strength, the mean values of experimental results may lead to serious misinterpretations concerning failure onset, and the reliability level is not also taken into account. A probability-based failure-prediction approach is likely to be a more suitable method of overcoming the above mentioned difficulties. In this paper, the experimental data are processed by Weibull theory and Weibull modulus were calculated by 2-parameter and 3-parameter Weibull distribution. Furthermore, the relationship between Weibull modulus and mechanical properties was studied. The results show that the tensile strength of flexible composites is preferred to be expressed with 3-parameter Weibull model. Compared with the average strength, it is more reasonable that the 5-percentile value was used as the design strength as far as reliability level is concerned.
