Preparation of hydroxyl terminated poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) open networks and its IPN system with poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)
Poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) has been widely used as a biomaterial due to its good compatibility, high mechanical strength, excellent oxygen permeability and ease of fabrication. However, modifications with hydrophilic functional groups or polymers are necessary to improve its surface wettability and water permeability for more extensive use such as drug delivery and long-term implantation. In the current work, interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of hydroxyl terminated PDMS and poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) were prepared by monomer immersion method and influencing factors on hydrogel content were investigated. Improved surface wettability and swelling ability suggested the hydrogel component were present on the surface as well as in the bulk material. Hydrogel content in the IPN system can be optimized by addition of solvent during both PDMS curing procedure and subsequent hydrogel incorporation step for better water permeability.
