Effect of twisting on properties of ultra-high modulus polyethylene filament tow treated by atmospheric pressure plasma jet

The ultrahigh modulus polyethylene (UHMPE) filament tows with different twists were used as medium system to investigate the influence of twisting on Atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) treated filament tow surfaces. The UHMPE filament tows with different twists, namely 0, 1, 2 and 3 cm -1 , were treated with APPJ. The change in surface wettability was determined using static contact angle measurements. Chemical changes on the fiber surface were characterized by x-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS). The adhesion improvement was analyzed by micro-bond pullout test. The results indicated that with the decreasing number of twisting, the modification effect was increased, which was confirmed by the decreased contact angle and the increased IFSS values. Therefore, it was concluded that the twisting significantly influenced the effect of APPJ treatment on the improvement of surface properties.
