The core-skin structure of PAN-based carbon fiber and its effect on the tensile strength

The PAN-based carbon fibers are of core-skin structure which influences the mechanical properties of the fibers. To explain the effect of core-skin structure on the mechanical properties of the PAN-based carbon fibers, the tensile strength of PAN-based carbon fibers was measured and the core-skin structure was examined by SEM observation on tensile fracture of carbon fibers. The relationship between the proportion of the skin part to the whole fiber and the strength of the fiber was discussed. It was found that the proportion of skin part on the tensile fracture of carbon fiber and the measured strength of carbon fiber was not clear linear dependent.
