The structure and properties of PAN fibers prepared by plasticized melt spinning

An environmental protection route for producing PAN fibers by melt spinning is being developed. The approach involved forming polyacrylonitrile with plasticizer A which can be melt-spun into fibers. PAN fibers were characterized using SEM, DMA and tensile testing. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the glass transition temperature of PAN decreased significantly owing to the addition of plasticizer A, which will be benefit to the subsequent hot-drawing and obtaining high drawing ratio because the plasticizer A can minish the interaction of PAN macromolecules. It was found that PAN/plasticizer mass ratio of 50/50 was the suitable composition for melt spinning and the tensile strength of PAN fibers fabricated at the spinning temperature of 185 o C could reach to 4.0cN/dtex. The fibers had a dense structure revealed by scanning electron microscopy.
