The drawing and mechanical properties of gel-spun HMWPE fiber
Under normal circumstance, the concentration of gel-spun ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) solution is about 5%~10%, HMWPE fibers can be prepared at much higher concentration. In this paper, HMWPE fiber is prepared by gel spinning. The effects of spinning temperature, screw rotating speed and the solution concentration on the drawability of resultant fibers are investigated. The results show that the drawability of gel fibers is higher than that of extracted fibers. The maximum achieved draw ratio (DR) of fibers increases with increasing of screw rotating speed or with the increasing spinning temperature and achieves optimal drawability at 280 ℃. As HMWPE concentration increases, DR increases first and then decreases. The maximum drawability is reached and the optimal mechanical property is achieved when the HMWPE concentration is 20 wt%.
